Streamline Paper Usage

By Suparna T.

Paper is a material that we use in our day-to-day life and we (unknowingly) waste so much of it without thinking of the effects on our environment. We forget to use paper wisely and many times donít use the simpler alternatives available. There is a lot of talk in corporate offices about going completely paperless but the fact remains that even today most of the businesses use a staggering 10,000 pages per year, a worrisome stat that needs to change and that canít change too quickly. There are simple tips both at an individual level and on a company level to improve the efficiency of our paper usage, which would go a long way in reducing our carbon footprint. Read and try out the following tips:

Home:
1. Use cloth napkins.
2. Use rags instead of paper towels.
3. Use a handkerchief instead of Kleenex.
4. Use a white board for lists/notes/announcements.
5. Use more durable and washables plates instead of paper plates for that BBQ party.

Offices:
1. Go digital in every aspect and use electronic ways to accomplish office tasks.
2. Print only the necessary documents and use more electronic ways to communicate.
3. Make presentations over a projector rather than the traditional way of handing out copies for several readers.
4. Create opportunities to increase awareness among employees of how to recycle paper and use it more wisely and efficiently.
5. Purchase recycled paper made out of paper pulp without the use of chlorine.
